Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha on Bheed, Anek’s failure: It breaks your heart

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, currently in the news for his latest film IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, recently discussed the box office failures of his previous films Bheed and Anek. While the former starred Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao, Anek was released in 2022 with Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead.
Speaking to Indian Express, the director shared feeling discouraged after some of his films did not perform well at the box office. “It almost discourages you from making more movies. It breaks your heart, it breaks your backbone. You lose confidence. You almost get encouraged not to make a film again. But then something else convinces you enough to do it again, and then you look back and say, ‘No, it’s not a big deal, it’s okay'”, he said.
Explaining further, he said, “I had three back-to-back hits, and then I had two films that didn’t work and those were also strange times, and I was making a dark film (Bheed) on Corona tragedy, and in black-and-white, it didn’t work. It’s okay.”
The filmmaker shared that as long as someone is not ashamed of their film or its content, they should keep moving forward. ‘If you make ten films and five of them are successful, then you’re doing pretty well,’ he said.”
Anubhav’s latest directorial, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, is currently streaming on Netflix.
